Medical Educational Experiences 

This program is designed to create a meaningful impact on patients, students, and staff as they work together to provide quality affordable healthcare to those in need. This program combines hands-on learning and research as directed by OneWorld Health medical staff.  

Medical Student Experiences

There are opportunities for a student to travel on their own or with a cohort. Applicants are to provide a Letter of Engagement and proof of defined partnership with OneWorld Health. The curriculum will be developed in conjunction with OWH staff and medical education staff. 

Central America
OneWorld Health has medical facilities in Nicaragua and Honduras, both offer long-term medical experiences. Those who wish to participate in this position must be fluent in Spanish as a translator will not be provided. 
The following are the medicine that can be practiced in our clinics:
  • Primary Care
  • Radiology 
  • Psychology 
  • Pediatric 
  • Outpatient Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Medical Student, year 2 and above
  • Public Health Graduate Student, year 2 and above

Uganda

OneWorld Health offers many opportunities for long-term medical experiences in Uganda. 
The following are the medicine that can be practiced in our clinics:
  • Internal Medicine 
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Pediatric Care
  • Radiology 
  • Emergency Medicine
  • General Surgery- Weeklong stay only 
  • Family Medicine
  • Dental
  • Medical Students, year 2 and above 
  • Physical Therapy Students, year 2 and above
  • Occupational Therapy Students, year 2 and above
  • Physician Assistant Students, year 2 and above
  • Nurse Practitioner Students, year 2 and above

Requirements

Prerequisites

  1. You must have an eligible passport.
  2. You must have a Yellow Fever vaccination.
  3. We expect you to be timely in response for correspondence.
  4. Completion of all Pre-Trip Requirements

Responsibilities

  1. Non-Medical Roles: registration, pharmacy, children’s therapy, logistics assistance and clinic coordination
  2. Medical Roles: dentist, dental assistant, dental hygienist, triage, provider and pharmacy
  3. Participate in daily morning Scripture reading and team time
  4. Adhere to OneWorld Health guidelines for appropriate conduct
  5. Respect your fellow teammates
  6. Value patient interactions
  7. Be open-minded
  8. Act from the overflow of a servant's heart
  9. Be ready for plans to change
  10. Enjoy a little (well, a lot of) dirt under your fingernails
  11. Think with long-term impact in mind

Restrictions

  1. You must be 18 years or older or with a parent/guardian.

Preparation

  1. Participate in Online Training via ServiceReef
  2. Follow instructions in in weekly emails for tasks and fundraising
