Team Nicaragua: Tour Monday

Incarnate - the word highlighted in our devotion this morning and the word that embodied our journeys of today. As we explored the to-be clinics awaiting the service of the hearts, bodies, and minds of those in the community, I couldn’t help but think of the coming to fruition of new clinic sites as an incarnation of hope and a depiction of the light of Jesus in the community.

The idea of showing up “in the flesh” has always been a guiding principle in my personal and professional life. To me, meaningful healthcare first starts with presence. The presence of a provider with a listening ear. One who priorities the voice of patients and families amidst their own perspective. An individual who uses knowledge as an force of compassion and support rather than a force of authority or division. To me, the best part of patient care in the field of speech language pathology, is meeting children and families where they are at. More than any diagnostic test, formal assessment, or clinical opinion, the ability to simply be with a patient/family proves to be the most critical piece of providing quality health care.

As we embark on our time of service at the Tola clinic, I am filled with a sense of hope. I am humbled to play a role in One World Health’s presence here in Nicaragua. It is a privilege to collaborate with the children and families and simply be.
