My day started at 2:30am when I was awoken by the sound of a beast right outside my tent. Ten feet away from where I lay walked the largest wild animal I had ever seen: a hippo grazing on the grass right outside our tent. I immediately remembered the previous day's devotional where the word of the day was “vulnerability,” and at that moment, I never felt more vulnerable. It was a great reminder that we are only visitors to their land, and it is important we respect that.

The rest of the day was spent visiting their habitat within the national park on safari. It was an incredible experience, one I will surely never forget. Seeing the animals where they have lived for thousands of years was truly humbling. It’s extremely rare to see either a lion or a leopard and we were blessed to see both, much closer than some were comfortable with.

The day continued with a relaxing dip in the pool and sharing stories and some of our life experiences with each other. It was a great retreat to unwind from the successful clinic days and something I look forward to experiencing again.
