Wheelchair Team Uganda: Day 4

Day four was a busy, busy, busy day! We have gotten quite the system over here, so that we have been able to deliver more wheelchairs and crutches each day! I began my day with Francis who got in an accident 30 years ago resulting in a below the knee amputation. Today he was able to move again on his own without crawling!

I finished my day similarly to yesterday, on the verge of tears as our rockstar Peter worked to walk again! Peter was also in an accident that resulted in a below the knee amputation, but his accident was only four months ago and he is determined for his wheelchair to be a temporary fix. He has rode his wheelchair twenty minutes back to clinic for the last two days for an intense physical therapy session where we get to help him walk! He did not even know it was a possibility for him to walk again until we pushed him and now he is determined. This experience has been bittersweet because we are all so proud of how far he has come in three days, but it is also heartbreaking to leave him tomorrow and only hope he can continue his rehab with his family and our staff here at MKMC.

Pictured above is Peter with the shirt we made for him to keep pushing! He has blessed and impacted all of us more than he knows and this shirt is a token of our thanks to him. His story, and so many more, are worth sharing and I only pray that they can continue to impact more lives in my future physical therapy career.
