The first day of clinic the group traveled to Village Astillero. Our school bus was packed to the brim with people who would be working with us. It is easy to say in the United States that sitting on a tightly packed bus with limited air conditioning would not be ideal, but most if not everyone walked to these clinics, so a bus was truly a gift. Some of the people that were seen today walked three hours to the clinics with their children.

Each child had an incredibly positive attitude and was full of energy. It is such an experience to remember the things we take for granted. These children had hours of fun with a single ball playing the game "Hit Ball," and it is so easy to get caught up and surrounded by material objects. Not even something like makeup or toys, but AC. It is something that can so easily be taken for granted until it is no longer there.

Today was certainly a learning opportunity for all of us on this trip. The determination that people have to walk 3 hours to a clinic and back is astounding. While most people in the United States can get into a car and drive to a hospital, it is not an option for some people here. That along with the knowledge that while these children are waiting to receive medications or have a check-up, they carry such a positive attitude that is difficult to be found anywhere else.

Remember to appreciate the things we usually take for granted especially the ability to access healthcare.
