Today we spent our first day in the clinic. Everyone quickly fell into place and assumed their assigned role like a well oiled machine. My role was child therapy which meant I got to play with the kids all day.

We colored, jumped rope and played chase. We also played a lot of soccer, and the kids were so good and strong. As goalie I almost was hit in the head a few times, but all in good fun. Despite the language barrier, we were able to communicate through small phrases and body language. The smiles on the kids facing while playing and their laughs while I spoke broken Spanglish made my day.

A particular moment of note was when a young girl who was studying English in her elementary school acted as my translator on her own accord. She was so happy to help and really helped me connect with the kids. Despite being young, she was a natural leader. It was amazing the watch her in action.

At the end of the day, her aunt and grandmother came over to thank our team. They had traveled by taxi from three towns over and mentioned how blessed they felt to be able to receive good healthcare. They were so thankful with eyes full of joy and beaming smiles across their faces. Just as they felt blessed by us, we felt so blessed to be of service. I was especially grateful for the young girl’s help. It’s amazing how small acts of kindness can create strong connections even in spite of our very different life experiences. What a wonderful world we live in!
